The Provincial Government of Davao del Norte designed a waste recycling program dubbed “Basuresiklo: Gasa ni Kuya, Baylo sa Basura” .
The buy-back waste recycling scheme involving the youth supports the implementation of RA 9003 or known as the Solid Waste Management Act of 2004.
Clean and dry residual and recyclable wastes generated in public schools through the Youth for Environment Savers Organization are collected.
Wastes collected are weighed with each kilo has corresponding gift to be given to a student by the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte. For every kilo of wastes collected, a kilo of rice will be received by the student. A tumbler will given to those students who were able to collect three kilograms of wastes. Collected wastes of five kilograms, a student will be given a pack-bag with school supplies. Those with less than a kilo of wastes collected will receive bag-tags.
RD Sophie T. Manuel, CESO V considers the program to be “innovative strategy in addressing solid waste management problem”. The youth are involved in this program serving as catalysts for behavioral change as the younger generation are proactive which can be a gateway to “develop a culture of discipline in waste reduction, RD Manuel added.
Several schools in Davao del Norte are engaged in this program designed to address solid waste management issues. “This is a welcome development and an efficient way to start a behavioral change which can be replicated by other LGUs” RD Manuel added.
